Movie Review : Aa Dekhen Zara

AA DEKHEN ZARA had the potential to be an exciting fare, but the post-interval portions prove a deterrent. The fantastic promotion coupled with the popular musical score will ensure ample footfalls in the opening weekend, but the film lacks the stamina to run steadily.

An interesting thought may not necessarily translate into an interesting screenplay. AA DEKHEN ZARA is a prime example of this statement.

Think about it... A man inherits his grandfather's camera and with the camera comes the ability to see the future. What an idea, Sirji... But AA DEKHEN ZARA is akin to a bottle of soda, which starts off with a lot of energy, but the fizz settles down faster than expected.

AA DEKHEN ZARA had great potential to be a riveting thriller, but halfway through the film, you realize that the writers have run out of ideas. In fact, by the time the film reaches the finale, the viewer is terribly confused [like the writers of this film]. This is one jigsaw puzzle that remains unsolved even after its culmination.

In a nutshell, AA DEKHEN ZARA promises the moon, but what you eventually get in return is merely a mirage.

Ray [Neil Nitin Mukesh], a struggling photographer, has nothing going for him... until he inherits a very special camera from his grandfather which changes his life in a way that he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams.

The power of the camera changes Ray's destiny overnight. His life becomes one big roller coaster ride that takes him from rags to riches and also helps him meet the love of his life, Simi [Bipasha Basu], who is a DJ with a mind of her own. Everything is hunky dory.

As they say with great power comes great responsibility and in Ray's case, also great danger. He must now face up to the dark side of reality and win not only against the evil forces, but also against fate.

Come to think of it, your imagination can run wild with a premise like the one in AA DEKHEN ZARA. But the film runs out of fuel midway.

Director Jehangir Surti has an eye for visuals, but he ought to know that the viewer wants to listen to a good story, told in the most simplistic manner. You ought to be extra careful if you're attempting a suspense thriller. You need to disentangle the knots in such a way that the mystery doesn't remain a mystery in the end. In this case, it still remains a mystery.

15 minutes into the film and you're drawn into Neil's world. You are exhilarated every time he wins a lottery or race. The introduction of the negative force [Rahul Dev] is smartly handled as well. But the plot slackens thereafter.

Let's get specific, the second hour is a problem. The screenplay should've packed some great moments, but the writers seem to take an easy way out. Sample this. While on the run, Neil and Bipasha suddenly break into a dance in a tacky pub. Prior to that they jump from the roof of the hotel and land straight into the pool. The cat and mouse game gets more and more confusing with the finale only adding to the chaos.

Jehangir Surti can't do much since he's saddled with a poor script. Music is the sole saving grace. The songs are youthful and energetic, one of the reasons why AA DEKHEN ZARA has generated tremendous interest. Cinematography is good. The chase and stunts are well canned.

Neil Nitin Mukesh showed great promise in his debut film and you only expect him to climb the ladder in his next release. Sadly, the screenplay doesn't give him that opportunity. Bipasha Basu is alright. She looks great though. Rahul Dev is perfect for the part. Biswajeet [Neil's grandfather] has a tiny role. Sophie Chaudhary adds to the glamour quotient. She doesn't get much scope, frankly. Bobby Vats is okay.

On the whole, AA DEKHEN ZARA had the potential to be an exciting fare, but the post-interval portions prove a deterrent. The fantastic promotion coupled with the popular musical score will ensure ample footfalls in the opening weekend, but the film lacks the stamina to run steadily.

BJP launches 'Bhay Ho' to counter Congress' 'Jai Ho'

Seeking to counter the 'Jai Ho' ad campaign of the Congress, BJP on Saturday unveiled a parody of the famous Slumdog Millionaire song saying 'Bhay Ho' (let fear prevail).

"The video is not an official one. It is sent to us by a party sympathiser. This song depicts the real situation of the country. It says.... Bhay (fear) ho.... bhook (hunger) ho.... Atank (terror) ho.... Mahangayi (inflation) ho.... phir bhi jai ho," party spokesperson Sidhaarthnath Singh told reporters.

The song features street children from Hyderabad, singing the song in the general compartment of a train and a stranger planting a bomb in the railway coach.

BJP said the street singers are already taking the message against the ruling Congress by their performances.

"The artists are street singers and they are already into the job of taking the message to different areas with this song even before it is unveiled here," Singh said.

Even as the saffron party opposed the idea of the Slumdog Millionaire child artists campaigning for Congress, calling it a "mockery of poverty", the short film features two street children Nagarjun and Durga singing the song.

On being asked if the party feared a copyright violation of the tune by launching the 'Bhay Ho' song, Singh said, "we will respond to the notice if it is sent to us".

A public relation company had earlier purchased the rights of the 'Jai Ho' song for its use in the Congress campaign.

The saffron party has plans to use 'Bhay Ho' in its rallies across the country. The party is also slated to unveil another ad song in a couple of days featuring 'team Advani'.

The campaign song will feature all the Chief Ministers and the central leaders of the party.

The more-than-two minute film will begin with the famous 'andhera chattega.... Kamal khilega' (darkness will disappear and the lotus will bloom) speech of Atal Bihari Vajpayee which the party patron gave during the foundation function of the party in the early 80s.

Jaane Tu’s coming back.

genelia

Last summer Abbas Tyrewala’s ‘Jaane Tu…Yaa Jaane Na’ was a youth blockbuster.

Imran Khan became an instant hit and it also revived the career of Genelia D’Souza who had been struggling for a while to make a mark in Bollywood and had shifted to the South.

Now the movie that made a mark is coming back with a sequel and Abbas Tyrewala has revealed the details of the sequel too.

You may recall that ‘Jaane Tu’ had a quintessential Bollywood style climax with a happy ending. The buzz is that the story now will focus on the characters of Imran and Genelia, Jai and Aditi, and the troubles they now face in their married life.

Genelia who has movies like ‘It’s My Life’ with Harman Baweja, ‘Life Partner’ with Fardeen Khan and ‘Hook Ya Crook’ with John Abraham has admitted that the movie changed her career and it would be nice to reunite with the whole team.

Abbas Tyrewala is currently working on his the film titled 1-800 Love which has his wife Paakhi opposite John Abraham and will then shift to the ‘Jaane Tu’ sequel.

Aamir, Salman and SRK join hands

Irrespective of their numerous internal squabbles, for this one time all the Khans have come together. Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have both sent consent letters to the producers’ body that they are standing by the film-funders and not the multiplexes in the current stand-off plaguing the celluloid industry.

What’s more interesting is that Salman Khan (who has sworn to never patch up with SRK post their rift at Katrina Kaif’s birthday) too has joined SRK and Aamir by telling the producers that he is on their side. Saif Ali Khan, we have learnt, will also show his allegiance to the film-makers and not the exhibitors.

Mukesh Bhatt, chairman of the producers’ body, says, “It is true that we have got consent letters from the big Khans in the film fraternity. As you know, all of them have turned producers and so they are on our side and not the multiplexes. We want to show the multiplexes that we all are together in this fight.” Interestingly, Aamir is very close to PVR as he forged a partnership with the company for his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par.

Earlier, a source had tipped us about the development, “When the core committee of the producers’ body took a decision to ban the multiplexes, they asked all the producers for consent on the decision. The Khans were approached too as they all own production houses. Being producers, they had to side the funding body.”

Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0, adds copy and paste, Spotlight search, plenty more

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search. Improvements include:

App and developer functionality (more here)
  • Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
  • Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
  • Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
  • Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
  • Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
  • Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
General functionality
  • Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time. (more here)
  • MMS, along with forward and delete for multiple messages. (more here)
  • A2DP stereo Bluetooth.
  • Unlocked Bluetooth functionality on 2G iPod touch. (more here)
  • Spotlight has been added to a new home screen page to the left of existing pages, allowing for universal search on the phone. (more here)
  • Tethering is built into 3.0, and Apple will work with carriers on that -- who will have the last say on its implementation, most likely.
  • App Store will be available in 77 countries.
  • Parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps.
  • Auto-login for WiFi hotspots.
Apple apps
  • A new app called Voice Memos which lets you record notes and reminders.
  • A revised Stocks app, with news stories and a landscape view.
  • Landscape view available for Mail, Text and Notes.
  • CalDAV support has been added to Calendar, along with subscriptions support in the .ics format.
  • Apple's major apps have all been expanded with search functionality.
  • Note syncing to Mac and PC.
  • YouTube account support.
  • Form auto-fill.
  • Phishing protection.
  • Shake the shuffle iPod playback.
A developer beta of OS 3.0 is available today, and the 3.0 update will be coming to consumers this summer as a free update to all iPhone 3G customers. It'll also work for 1st gen iPhone owners, though they won't receive A2DP or MMS due to hardware limitations. iPod touch owners will be able to update for $9.95, just like

Tata Motors to roll out Nano on March 23: Images

All that you wanted to know about the Nano
Tata Motors has announced that it will launch 'Nano', touted as the world's cheapest family car, on March 23, 209, in Mumbai and bookings will start from April this year.

The car was unveiled at the auto expo in Delhi in January 2008 and a function on March 23 would mark the car's commercial launch.

"The cars will be on display at Tata Motors dealerships from the first week of April 2009. Bookings will commence from the second week of April 2009," the company said in a statement.

The company expects to roll out cars initially from assembly lines in Pune (Maharashtra) and Pant Nagar (Uttarakhand), a makeshift arrangement till the main plant in Gujarat starts operations in October. In the first 12 months, the aim is to roll out around 100,000 cars.

The company said that the booking process and other details of the Rs one lakh car would be announced on the day of launch.

The Tata Nano will initially be available in three models — the Nano (base model), the CX (mid-level model) and LX (top-end model)

The cost of the base model will not exceed Rs 1 lakh (ex-factory, Pune)

Booking forms will be available at SBI, Westside, Croma stores and, of course, 400-odd Tata Motors dealerships

Booking forms will be available for only 14 days

Nano merchandise, including Nano phones and watches, will be marketed through various outlets
To begin with, only the petrol engine version will be available. The 624-cc two-cylinder petrol engine with a single balancer shaft (to avoid excessive vibrations) will have four valves. It will develop 35 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 4.8 kgm of torque at 3,000 rpm

The Nano should crack 60 kph in eight seconds and will have a top speed of 105 kph

The Nano will be available in BS II and BS III variants

The Nano will weigh 600 kg without load

The Nano will have only one spare tyre and it can be used to repair only the front tyres, since the rear tyre is of a different size. However, the car can be driven slowly even after a puncture (and should be repaired as soon as possible)

The Nano will have four forward gears and one reverse gear

The Nano will have a 15-litre fuel tank. With an expected mileage of slightly over 20 kpl, a full-tank will take you over 300 km

Only the driver’s seat will be adjustable in the base model

The Nano CX model will have air conditioning with a heater

The LX model will have power windows, central locking and fog lamps

The Nano will come with a warranty of 18 months or 24,000 km

The testing point, of course, will be when the diesel version is launched.

“Considering the teething problems of the Indica in its first few years, most customers will wait and watch . Also the volumes of 4,000 to 5,000 per month are too small to make any impact,” said a CEO of a leading automobile maker.

“Once the diesel version comes out, and I expect it to be priced at around Rs 1.70 lakh, the real volume numbers will come out. But that might take one to two years and pose a real challenge to small car makers,” he added.

Bollywood's Shilpa Shetty to visit sick Jade Goody

LONDON (Reuters) - Indian actress Shilpa Shetty will fly to Britain next week to visit Jade Goody, her former Celebrity Big Brother housemate who is dying of cancer, Goody's publicist Max Clifford said on Saturday.

Shetty, a Bollywood superstar, is due on Tuesday as part of a long-planned trip that will now give her a chance to see Goody, who has described herself as days away from death.

"Shilpa has spoken to Jade a few times in recent weeks -- they've gotten very close over the past year or so -- and while she's here in Britain she'll visit Jade," Clifford told Reuters.

Goody, 27, left the Royal Marsden Hospital in London this week and was moved to her home in Essex, north of London, where she is expected to remain until she dies.

Clifford described her as "very weak, really very ill" and said she was being cared for by nurses and her mother. Her husband Jack Tweed, 21, who she married last month, also visits when his police curfew allows.

Goody, a former dental assistant who became a nationwide celebrity after appearing in Big Brother in 2002, has had almost every element of her life examined in the tabloid newspapers, gossip magazines and on television since announcing last month that she had terminal cervical cancer.

The endless coverage has led to concerns Britain has become too celebrity obsessed, with someone who was unheard of a few years ago, and even now is only famous for being famous, leading news bulletins and filling front pages.

Goody and Shetty met when they appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007.

Gas prices are up. The economy is down. For some, neither matters--all they want is to be able to drive faster than anyone else on the road, whatever the cost. And the cars that can deliver that promise are built solely for speed. They're not the kinds of cars that are particularly good for anything else, such as dropping off the kids at school (unless they're running exceptionally late that day) or picking up a carton of milk on the way home from work.

These cars reach obscene speeds in mere seconds, the same amount of time that normal cars need just to warm up. Just ask Tom duPont, publisher of duPont Registry, a gallery of fine automobiles.

"A Bugatti test driver took a $100 bill and plastered it on the dashboard," recalls duPont, who was invited to strap into the passenger seat for a demonstration drive. "He told me I could have it if I could grab it once we took off."

The French-made Bugatti Veyron races from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and effortlessly cruises to a top speed of 253 mph. Most probably can't imagine what that feels like, but duPont learned firsthand.

"The car accelerates so fast that you can't touch [the $100 bill]," he said. "You can't move your hands.”

Even if duPont had managed to defy the laws of physics and become $100 richer, that wouldn't have afforded him a Bugatti Veyron or any of the other nine vehicles that made our list of the fastest cars in the world. DuPont cautions that superfast cars "aren't for the faint of heart financially or physically." The Veyron is the most expensive ultra-fast car on our list, with a price tag starting at $1.5 million.

But the Veyron is not the fastest car on the road, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. In March 2007 it tested the American-made SSC (Shelby Super Cars) Ultimate Aero and crowned it the Fastest Production Car in the world.

The $654,400 twin-turbocharged car boasts a top speed of 257 mph and goes from 0 to 60 in 2.78 seconds. Snagging this title marked a first for a U.S. auto manufacturer since the Ford GT40 claimed the Guinness record in 1967 with a top speed of 167 mph.

Rounding out the top five fastest cars are the $695,000 Swedish-made Koenigsegg CCX, top speed 250 mph; $595,450 American-made Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, top speed 248 mph; and the $700,000 British-made Bristol Fighter T, top speed 225 mph.

There are only a handful of these vehicles available in the world. Bugatti has said it will build a total of only 300 Veyrons since the model was introduced in 2005; Bristol custom-builds 20 Fighters each year.

Buyers who want these cars are placing their orders two years in advance, says Bassam Al-Farraj, founder and publisher of Rich Guy magazine. People who just can't wait that long will pay a premium, he says.

He adds, "I've seen people pay a million for the Ferrari Enzo," which is no longer in production but has a base manufacturer's suggested retail price of $670,000.

All of the cars on our list are street legal. So if you really do want to use one of them to cruise around town (or test the limits of how late in the morning you can leave for work), that's up to you. When researching which cars truly go fastest--with the automakers themselves , we excluded cars that are built and equipped for the sole purpose of racing on a track. We also excluded vehicles that are no longer in production.

If the wait is a bit too much to bear for one of the aforementioned cars and you are on a slightly tighter budget, you could check the second half of our fastest-cars list--some no less expensive, or more available. But you might get lucky.

They're the $741,000 Italian-made Pagani Zonda F, top speed 215 mph; $325,560 Netherlands-made Spyker C8 Double 12 S, top speed 215 mph; the $430,000 Italian-made Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, top speed 213 mph; $497,750 U.K.-made McLaren Mercedes SLR, top speed 206 mph; and the U.S.-made Silva GT3, which clocks in at 205 mph and sells for $75,000.

Would you ever purchase one of these cars, or are they just nice to look at? Add your thoughts in the Reader Comments section below.

Despite the high prices and lack of local roads on which one can actually drive these cars at their maximum speeds, demand for these luxury treats is heating up, says DuPont. Wealthy buyers in new markets like China are searching for expensive rewards for their newfound riches.

"Only the top 2% of the economic pyramid of the world are buying these cars," says duPont. "It is a reward for achieving personal success in life. There is new wealth emerging in developing countries, and they want the same luxury rewards."

And if any of those people happen to take you for a test drive, they may, with luck, put a $100 bill on the dashboard. Good luck grabbing it, but you're probably best off just enjoying the ride.
